Locals Drive to 'The Diner' Film Audition

Under the glare of bright lights while a casting director, camera man, and movie director observed in the background, actors throughout Florida fought jittery nerves Sunday as they answered an audition call to read scripts for supporting roles for the full-length movie “The Diner.”

The Lazarus Filmwork’s production will begin filming the Christian-based film in February with several scenes slated right here in Lake County.

“I should have sold tickets,” Director De Miller quipped by the sight of 35 actors – the first arrivals – filling seats in two rooms while several others stood outside the CEC Building of the First United Methodist Church in Mount Dora, quietly reading their parts.

SNL Holds Auditions for Black Female Cast

Saturday Night Live exec producer Lorne Michaels says he’s bringing seven or eight female African-American comediennes to New York to audition for the show on Monday — one of whom will be added to the cast in January.

As many as two could “potentially be considered” but he does not want to add too many women at this time because the cast already has five of them, Michaels told The New York Times, in an interview given in the wake of a news report he’d tried out about a dozen black female comediennes in Los Angeles on December 1.  Three paragraphs later, the reporter reminded readers that when criticism of the show’s new cast members broke out before the start of the new season,  Michaels had said his process for selecting cast members “was driven purely by talent considerations.” Michaels this afternoon told the NYT he had seen two black women performers in Chicago when he was hiring for the show this fall, but they didn’t pan out when brought to New York for their final auditions. “Then when the deck got reshuffled and as we premiered we realized, it looks a different way.” (That would also be about the time the press started shellacking Michaels because the list included no black women and the late night program had not had a black female cast member for six years.)

Spilled Secrets on Casting Auditions

You started with acting, but stuck with casting instead; what is your favorite part of casting?
It’s fun when you get to hire somebody for a role, especially if it’s someone that you have been tracking for a while, who you groomed and brought in over the years. Getting to call the agent and tell them they got the part is the best part; when it all works out, that’s a good day of casting.

Have you had actors that you’ve really championed?
Actors have to make casting directors their fans, and we have to make the client (producing director) a fan of the actor; it’s a gradual process and doesn’t happen overnight. There are many actors that I love and fight for. The challenging thing is that I don’t want to shove my opinion down a director or studio executive’s throat. Casting is like bartending: My job is to present the choices to the creative team and hope the director/producers like the choices.

Casting Rumors Over Batman vs. Superman Film

“Game of Thrones” star Jason Momoa may be on the big screen in 2015, as it is rumored he will play supervillian Doomsday in the highly anticipated “Man of Steel” sequel. The as-yet-untitled Batman-vs.-Superman film will be directed by Zack Snyder, who also directed “Man of Steel” and “300.”

Doomsday is best known as the character who killed Superman, and was originally known as “The Ultimate.”

Momoa seems well-qualified to play the villainous fighter: In 2011, he played the title role in “Conan the Barbarian” as a warrior who seeks revenge on an evil warlord, and on the hit HBO series “Game of Thrones,” he stars as Khal Drogo, a warlord and feared warrior.

Hundreds Flock to Bernsen Film Auditions

More than 500 people packed the parking lot in front of Pet Extreme Monday evening, vying for a role in a Corbin Bernsen penned and directed romantic comedy film, set to be shot in Turlock.

And standing last in line, far across the parking lot, almost to the entrance of the Home Depot, was me.

That's right: I, too, was drawn in by the allure of stardom, of the chance to see my face on the big screen. Or at least the chance to write an article about my failed attempt at fame, as the case may be.

My fatal error, it seems, was arriving at 5:48 p.m. – just 12 minutes before the open auditions were set to start. The man first in line, Robert Fourre, told me he arrived nearly six hours earlier, right at the stroke of noon.

What to Avoid in Star Wars Audition

Open auditions are to be held for the new Star Wars film. While the 17-23 age range rules out most fans of the original trilogy, here are some things younger Star Wars aficionados should avoid if they want to be rocking it in a galaxy far, far away.

7. There’s a time and a place for Star Wars jokes. And it’s probably not when you are trying to make yourself look ‘beautiful and smart’.

6. ‘You know what guys; a banana slapping itself in the face would improve this movie,’ is something you don’t want to find yourself saying.

5. Trying to fill any gaps in conversation or justifying your actions through a narrow-minded understanding of democracy is just silly.

Early Casting Speculation for Steven Spielberg's Next Film

DreamWorks announced Wednesday that "Lincoln" alum Steven Spielberg, the film's director, and Doris Kearns Goodwin, the historian who wrote the book on which the film was based, would be teaming up again for a movie about President Theodore Roosevelt and President William Howard Taft.

It will be based on Goodwin's latest book, "The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism," which hits book stands Tuesday and is said to be about who the friendship between Roosevelt and Taft that turned into a rivalry, as well as the muckraking journalism that shaped the Progressive Era. Spielberg spent years working on "Lincoln" so it may be a while before the film comes to fruition. Nevertheless, it's never too early to start speculating on the casting.

One Way to Ruin an Audition

I was casting a TV pilot a few years ago, and one of the roles was described as an “Old-World Hollywood agent. He even wears a pocket square in his suit jacket.” All of the lovely actors who came in were dressed to the nines.

I brought in an actor from Canada whom I didn’t know personally, but I had seen his demo reel and been impressed. It was enough to convince me to bring him straight to the producers without a pre-read because I was pressed for time. He had a great comedy background and was a fresh face out here, so I thought it would be an interesting audition at the very least.

Jennifer Lawrence's Nearly Perfect 'Hunger Games' Audition

As the debut of "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" approaches, the franchise's filmmakers reflected on how the stars aligned for the series once it cast Jennifer Lawrence as leading lady Katniss Everdeen.

More than 50 actresses were vying for the coveted role when auditions began in March 2011, according to a new story in Variety. But for producer Nina Jacobson, as soon as Lawrence read the scene where Katniss says goodbye to her sister Primrose before heading off to the Games, she knew they'd found their star.

"I teared up," Jacobson told the trade. "We had a lot of wonderful actresses at the audition, but it was game over at that point."

Film Dance 'Sayaw' to Cast in November

SAN FRANCISCO—Renowned Philippine filmmaker Cecilio Asuncion and his Thigh High Productions LLC are making a feature-length documentary entitled “Sayaw”—which films the casting, rehearsals and auditions of a San Francisco-based dance company led by dance master Jay Loyola—as it prepares to compete in the 2014 San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival.

Loyola, in association with ODC School Audition Series, will hold auditions for the group on Nov. 10 in San Francisco. His successful dance projects have built partnerships with dance artists, musicians, arts institutions, government agencies, universities, schools and other dance companies.

Loyola believes that Philippine dance can span geographic, etymological and cultural borders. His goal is to offer dance artists new sources for creative exploration and an energetic exchange with other artists. “Dance is not only comprised of form and technique, but a spiritual experience,” says Loyola.

Paramount Film Looks for Teen Lead

"Need help casting my film! Know a teen football player who’s a quiet thoughtful giant?” Reitman wrote.

He would like people who fit the profile to record a few lines for a chance to be cast in a Paramount pictures production. The role they are looking to fill is Tim, a sweet, but isolated football star who now plays lots of video games. Tim is a gentle giant who is over 6’2″ but speaks softly.

The film will be released sometime in 2014, well, that's if they can get this role cast. The film 'Men, Women, Children' explores family issues and sex in the new digital age of Facebook and social media. It is based on the 2011 Chad Kultgen novel.

'Divergent' Spills Audition Process

Miles Teller has revealed that he auditioned for the role of four in the upcoming film "Divergent."
During an interview with the blog Just Jared the actor revealed that he had tried out for the male lead in the new young adult adaptation. He said, "I originally auditioned for Four and that didn't work out."

However he said that he did not have to audition for the role of Peter, which he eventually got. He said, "I didn't have to audition. The director saw Shailene [Woodley] and I in Spectacular Now, and said, 'Hey, would you be interested in this?'"

He continued, "And they're like, 'We think you would make a good villain. Would you want to play the role of Peter?' And I said 'Yeah, sure.' I didn't know much about him. I read the script, obviously. Once I was cast and people were talking about it online, I read the book after. I didn't know that Peter was so hated."

Outstanding Actor Website that Leads to Great Auditions

Your website is probably the most important marketing tool you have. Why? It encompasses all of your marketing tools under one umbrella. It is your store, your homefront. Even when you are out of town or working on set, an agent or casting director can see your work and forward it on to someone who’s interested in auditioning and hiring you! It works for you while you sleep. And it’s live and ever-changing as you grow and develop your career. You can add new clips from films and TV series. You can add new photos from vacations and Industry events you attended, new commercials, voiceovers, and a weekly blog so we learn a little bit about your interests, viewpoints, and personal style. It sells you when you aren’t there in person.

Here are seven things your website should have.

1. Welcome Page. Use a headshot that most accurately shows your personality and include a greeting like “Welcome to my site!” or something appropriate to your brand and personality. Perhaps you might want to include a mission statement or your favorite inspiring quote. Use your favorite colors, and include something personal, such as your “everyday” hat, signature outfit, your motorcycle, or your pet. The professional stuff comes next.

Encouragement within "As Bees in Honey Drown" Audition

Witnessing an audition for a play is a little different than for a dance audition. With The College’s Dance Ensemble auditions last month, you get to observe the movements of the dancer, and how they show off their talent through music. As a dancer myself, it’s interesting to watch them fly across the stage; friends cheer each other up when they stumble in front of choreographers, or forget their steps. You learn by observing their moves, and creating your own in your head. Play auditions don’t require you to use improvisation as much; the script is what you are given to make something out of it.

The College held auditions for the ironic and sarcastic comedy “As Bees in Honey Drown” on Oct. 4, and it was intriguing to see the performance anxiety level in the eyes of those who tried out. Six people were to be cast, with four actors playing different characters included. Some actors were good and made the director, Shane Taylor, laugh with their use of comedy. Some were nervous and unprepared to speak in front of the director. Taylor was most impressed by third year student Heather Leigh. Leigh tried out for the lead role of con artist Alexa Vere de Vere, and even with the script in front of her, she knew how to portray and explain Vere de Vere’s emotions.

Audition Reels Might Soon be the Key Factor

Performers used to have one shot to nail their audition in a studio, but we are now in an age of technology in which actors looking to break into the business may be smart to first shine on the smallest of screens.

Online video has quickly become the popular way for stage actors to be seen. Tim Grady realized the need for theatrical video reels in 2012 when he was working a gig at Maltz Jupiter Theatre in Florida. As the guy with a Flip cam, he was constantly being asked by cast mates to record them singing so they could send clips to a New York audition they were missing. “I kept thinking while I was filming actors that there had to be a way professionally to put yourself together in a three-minute reel that shows off your acting, singing, dancing abilities and then present that to casting directors,” he says. So Grady founded Tim Grady Films—a professional reel-making service catering to musical theater performers. “The need for a theatrical reel is becoming as necessary as a headshot and résumé,” he says.

Things to Know Before You Say Yes to Audition

Today's column focuses on the business of acting, rather than the art. Due to a recent booking issue with an actor and an agency, I initially wanted to write about things you need to know before you accept a job. However, upon second thought, it's important you don't go through the audition process for a job you wouldn't accept. So here are seven things you should know before accepting an audition!

1. Accountability. You may have a great agency with a reliable staff representing you, but remember that your career is your responsibility. If you receive an audition appointment and have concerns over any of the below details, ask! Don't make assumptions, and don't confirm without getting your questions answered.

2. Availability. It is your responsibility to double check callback and shoot dates for a job prior to confirming an initial audition—even if you have given book-out dates to your agency. If you're not available for the callback and/or shoot dates, cancel the appointment.

Audition tips Straight from America's Got Talent Producer

America may not have a functional government, a decent public transportation system, or a healthy collective BMI. But one thing we do have is talent in spades. And America's Got Talent will be looking for their latest and greatest in Miami on October 26 and 27.

Unlike lots of talent-based shows, for this gig, there's room for whatever bizarre skill set you happen to have. They're looking for anything and everything. And to prep you for your turn on stage, we spoke to executive producer Jason Raff on what to do, what not to do, and why a dude breakdancing in an inflatable cow costume was a win.

How to Manage the Waiting Period During Post-Audition

So you just left the casting office after auditioning for a recurring role on that gritty new cable series everyone’s raving about. There are easily 10,000 actors who would give up an organ to land a part on that show. You feel you’re perfect for the role and have prepared for the role responsibly.

As you’re walking back to the car muttering your lines under your breath, thoughts—both crazy and lucid—are racing through your mind. “I think I nailed it, but what did they think?” or “Oh shit, that was a mess. I hope they didn’t notice.”

A very common and constant question actors have after a film or TV audition is: “When should I expect to hear back from casting?” The answer is: There’s no way to know. The soonest you may hear is that day and the longest may be up to seven months. Aside from staying positive, owning a functional cell phone, and checking the status of the project on IMDb, here are some other fun and proactive things you can do.

Lightsabers Involvement for Saoirse Ronan's Star Wars VII Audition

What do you picture in your mind when you read about the plethora of actors allegedly going in for auditions on J.J. Abrams cloaked-in-secret Star Wars: Episode VII? Does it involve actors miming an escape from a Sarlacc pit or acting as if they’re standing aboard a ship that’s being attacked? Surely Abrams & Co. aren’t letting actors run around with lightsabers, are they? They are! Well, they’re at least pretending to, according to Empire and Saorise Ronan, the Host actress who was rumored to have recently read for a role in the film. Not only has she confirmed the audition, but also mentioned that the tryout involved acting as if she was handling one of the most famous weapons in sci-fi history.

So what does this mean? Nothing, really, since for all we know, Ronan was just auditioning for a role in a fake commercial that Abrams is going to have someone watch for a split second in the background of a cantina in the middle of the movie. But it’s nice knowing nothing at this point, because speculation can and does run rampant. But it’s how she brings It up that gives us an interesting clue.

The sets are a bit wonky, the Batsuit is Val Kilmer's and Amy Adams (!) is Rachel Dawes, but in Bale's performance you can still spot the seeds of his powerful turn as the Caped Crusader.

With millions of dollars on the line, Hollywood have to make absolutely certain they're picking the actor for the job, so elaborate in-costume scenes are frequently filmed to get a sense for the finished performance.

Digital Spy has trawled through the video archives to find 10 screen tests featuring actors trying out for the roles that made them famous, and a few who missed out on a career-changer by a whisker.

Tom Selleck for Raiders of the Lost Ark
Tom Selleck's career could have turned out very differently if his commitment to Magnum PI hadn't scuppered his chances of playing Indiana Jones. Selleck was believed to be Steven Spielberg and George Lucas's first choice for the part, but fate intervened and Harrison Ford eventually nabbed the part.

Star Wars VII Casting Makes Way for the Wookie's Return

A casting call for seven-foot actors from the studios behind the new Star Wars films has fueled speculation that wookiees could be making a return to the long-running space saga.

Disney, Lucasfilm and production company Bad Robot, owned by director JJ Abrams, issued the call via a British casting and auction service, Spotlight. Star War: Episode VII is being filmed in London early next year for a 2015 release date.

The call, for a movie cited only as "untitled studio feature" is for a "male 7 ft to 7.3 ft tall with a slim/thin build and upright posture. Not too worked out or too 'thick set' especially in the shoulders. Broad facial features would be a bonus." The wookie-like requirements were first picked up by Den of Geek

Recalling 'Batman Begins' Audition

There are a lot of bat-goodies contained within the 90 minutes of new special features on Warner Bros.’s new Dark Knight Trilogy Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu-ray. (Try saying that three times fast.) But this clip could very well be the collection’s coolest moment. It’s pre-Batman Christian Bale! Doing a screen test for Batman Begins! Wearing Val Kilmer’s old batsuit from Batman Forever. And acting opposite… Amy Adams! (Don’t get too glum thinking about what might have been, Katie Holmes haters — she was only there as a favor to the movie’s casting director.)

As the video proves, Bale’s rumbly batvoice was there from the very beginning — before the beginning, even. “He had decided that Batman had to have a different voice… that he had to put on a voice,” director/co-writer Christopher Nolan explains over footage of the screen test.

Casting Buzz on 'World of Warcraft'

Colin Farrell and Paula Patton are being considered for important roles in the movie adaptation of “World of Warcraft,” a video game set in medieval times, according to reports.

Deadline reported that Patton is “negotiating for a lead role" with Legendary Pictures and Atlas Entertainment, and "another lead has been offered to" Farrell.

Sources told Deadline that the chances of the “Total Recall” actor and “2 Guns” actress striking a deal are 50/50, and so, director Duncan Jones -- best known for directing science fiction films “Moon” and “Source Code” --  is considering other actors for major roles as well.

According to reports, the movie has been in the works since 2006, with Steven Spielberg initially rumored to direct the movie. But, Sam Raimi, who helmed Disney’s fantasy adventure “Oz: The Great and Powerful,” was later roped in for the movie. However, his departure from the movie was announced during Comic-Con 2012.

'The Sound of Music' Draws Hundreds of Kids for Audition

NEW YORK (AP) — The smiles were large and the hopes even bigger — but the odds were long.

As many as 700 boys and girls attended an open casting call on Sunday to try to win six spots as von Trapp siblings in the upcoming NBC live broadcast of "The Sound of Music" opposite Carrie Underwood.

During a grueling day, the hopefuls were split up into seven rooms in the Grace Church School so casting directors from the Telsey + Company agency could weed out the potential gems.

After an initial screening, potential candidates were sent to a special room overseen by agency founder Bernie Telsey, who estimates he saw at least 80 children. He said he fell in love with about 10 candidates and will call-back up to 25 to be seen by the show's directors.

Auditions for Extras on Thomas Hardy Film

Earlier this month, hundreds queued in Bridport for the open casting of Far from the Madding Crowd.

Producers say the initial response means they can be more specific about the people they need.

Young men and women with natural hair are needed for the film which will be shot in Dorset in the autumn.

Assistant director Guy Campbell said the initial auditions proved "very useful" but a new session was scheduled after they had been contacted by many people who missed the first date.
