Recalling 'Batman Begins' Audition

There are a lot of bat-goodies contained within the 90 minutes of new special features on Warner Bros.’s new Dark Knight Trilogy Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu-ray. (Try saying that three times fast.) But this clip could very well be the collection’s coolest moment. It’s pre-Batman Christian Bale! Doing a screen test for Batman Begins! Wearing Val Kilmer’s old batsuit from Batman Forever. And acting opposite… Amy Adams! (Don’t get too glum thinking about what might have been, Katie Holmes haters — she was only there as a favor to the movie’s casting director.)

As the video proves, Bale’s rumbly batvoice was there from the very beginning — before the beginning, even. “He had decided that Batman had to have a different voice… that he had to put on a voice,” director/co-writer Christopher Nolan explains over footage of the screen test.

10 Notable Film Auditions

The Dark Knight Trilogy's upcoming 'Ultimate Collection' Blu-ray release packs in a host of never-before-seen special features. For real film geeks, there's the chance to get a glimpse of Christian Bale and Cillian Murphy's screen tests for Batman Begins.

The sets are a bit wonky, the Batsuit is Val Kilmer's and Amy Adams (!) is Rachel Dawes, but in Bale's performance you can still spot the seeds of his powerful turn as the Caped Crusader.

With millions of dollars on the line, Hollywood have to make absolutely certain they're picking the actor for the job, so elaborate in-costume scenes are frequently filmed to get a sense for the finished performance.

Casting Buzz on 'World of Warcraft'

Colin Farrell and Paula Patton are being considered for important roles in the movie adaptation of “World of Warcraft,” a video game set in medieval times, according to reports.

Deadline reported that Patton is “negotiating for a lead role" with Legendary Pictures and Atlas Entertainment, and "another lead has been offered to" Farrell.

Sources told Deadline that the chances of the “Total Recall” actor and “2 Guns” actress striking a deal are 50/50, and so, director Duncan Jones -- best known for directing science fiction films “Moon” and “Source Code” --  is considering other actors for major roles as well.

According to reports, the movie has been in the works since 2006, with Steven Spielberg initially rumored to direct the movie. But, Sam Raimi, who helmed Disney’s fantasy adventure “Oz: The Great and Powerful,” was later roped in for the movie. However, his departure from the movie was announced during Comic-Con 2012.

'The Sound of Music' Draws Hundreds of Kids for Audition

NEW YORK (AP) — The smiles were large and the hopes even bigger — but the odds were long.

As many as 700 boys and girls attended an open casting call on Sunday to try to win six spots as von Trapp siblings in the upcoming NBC live broadcast of "The Sound of Music" opposite Carrie Underwood.

During a grueling day, the hopefuls were split up into seven rooms in the Grace Church School so casting directors from the Telsey + Company agency could weed out the potential gems.

After an initial screening, potential candidates were sent to a special room overseen by agency founder Bernie Telsey, who estimates he saw at least 80 children. He said he fell in love with about 10 candidates and will call-back up to 25 to be seen by the show's directors.

Auditions for Extras on Thomas Hardy Film

Earlier this month, hundreds queued in Bridport for the open casting of Far from the Madding Crowd.

Producers say the initial response means they can be more specific about the people they need.

Young men and women with natural hair are needed for the film which will be shot in Dorset in the autumn.

Assistant director Guy Campbell said the initial auditions proved "very useful" but a new session was scheduled after they had been contacted by many people who missed the first date.

Casting Discussion over 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'

The first piece of official casting for 2015′s Marvel movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron, was for the title character. Writer/director Joss Whedon turned to James Spader to play the all-powerful, hyper-intelligent robot, and the choice made a ton of sense. All through Spader’s career, in films like Pretty In Pink and Less Than Zero, his indie work in Sex, Lies and Videotape and Crash, and his popular TV work on Boston Legal, The Practice and The Office, he’s excelled at playing an icy, morally ambiguous character.

Sometimes he’s a good guy, sometimes he’s a bad guy, but it’s rarely that simple.

So while the casting made sense, maybe you want to hear Whedon’s own comments on his reasons for casting Spader. A new Marvel video lets the director voice his thought process.

Audition Tape Reveals 'The Office' Alternate Version

Almost 6 months ago, as The Office neared the end of its 9th and final season, cast member Rainn Wilson (who plays Dwight Schrute) posted a sign-in sheet for the first round of casting for the NBC show.  Some of the names on the list were rather intriguing—Adam Scott was auditioning for the part of Jim Halpert, as was Hamish Linklater. The call sheet is unaltered, and you can see these very names scribbled and locked in 2003.

Entertainment Weekly raised the fascinating premise of The Office That Never Was when they posted a compilation of audition tapes (that will be part of the forthcoming season 9 DVD) showing the likes of Seth Rogen (auditioning for Dwight), Bob Odenkirk (reading for Michael Scott, played by Steve Carell);  John Cho and Adam Scott for (each offering their takes on Jim Halpert, the part that ultimately went to John Krasinski). Scott’s idea of  Jim was similar to Krasinski’s—slightly disaffected, sardonic—though a bit more of a depressive, similar to Scott’s substance-abusing former actor on Party Down.  John Cho at Dunder-Mifflin would have probably have caused the writers to think twice when writing Steve Carell’s improv character named Ping, a medley of heavily accented Asian stereotypes.

Casting Call Over Marisha Pessl's Night Film

It could be asserted that movies are the greatest magic trick ever conceived. A group of strangers gather someplace and pretend to be people other than themselves. They are told where and how to move. They speak words written for them by yet another stranger. Their actions are recorded by mechanical means, combined with music written after the fact, shipped around the world, and thrown onto giant screens as a collection of light, shadow, and sound. The combination of all these ingredients and effects can make a person laugh involuntarily, cry, check under the bed before turning out the light, or view an aspect of their lives from a whole new angle.

There’s something almost alarming about such influence, especially when it sneaks up on us in the dark. Tricks can be benign, but they can also be the opposite of treats. Marisha Pessl’s new Night Film wraps a fast-paced thriller around an exploration of some of the darker ways in which reality can become blurred when the “magic of the movies” escapes from the screen.
