One Way to Ruin an Audition

I was casting a TV pilot a few years ago, and one of the roles was described as an “Old-World Hollywood agent. He even wears a pocket square in his suit jacket.” All of the lovely actors who came in were dressed to the nines.

I brought in an actor from Canada whom I didn’t know personally, but I had seen his demo reel and been impressed. It was enough to convince me to bring him straight to the producers without a pre-read because I was pressed for time. He had a great comedy background and was a fresh face out here, so I thought it would be an interesting audition at the very least.

Jennifer Lawrence's Nearly Perfect 'Hunger Games' Audition

As the debut of "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" approaches, the franchise's filmmakers reflected on how the stars aligned for the series once it cast Jennifer Lawrence as leading lady Katniss Everdeen.

More than 50 actresses were vying for the coveted role when auditions began in March 2011, according to a new story in Variety. But for producer Nina Jacobson, as soon as Lawrence read the scene where Katniss says goodbye to her sister Primrose before heading off to the Games, she knew they'd found their star.

"I teared up," Jacobson told the trade. "We had a lot of wonderful actresses at the audition, but it was game over at that point."

Film Dance 'Sayaw' to Cast in November

SAN FRANCISCO—Renowned Philippine filmmaker Cecilio Asuncion and his Thigh High Productions LLC are making a feature-length documentary entitled “Sayaw”—which films the casting, rehearsals and auditions of a San Francisco-based dance company led by dance master Jay Loyola—as it prepares to compete in the 2014 San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival. 

Loyola, in association with ODC School Audition Series, will hold auditions for the group on Nov. 10 in San Francisco. His successful dance projects have built partnerships with dance artists, musicians, arts institutions, government agencies, universities, schools and other dance companies. 

Loyola believes that Philippine dance can span geographic, etymological and cultural borders. His goal is to offer dance artists new sources for creative exploration and an energetic exchange with other artists. “Dance is not only comprised of form and technique, but a spiritual experience,” says Loyola.

Paramount Film Looks for Teen Lead

"Need help casting my film! Know a teen football player who’s a quiet thoughtful giant?” Reitman wrote.

He would like people who fit the profile to record a few lines for a chance to be cast in a Paramount pictures production. The role they are looking to fill is Tim, a sweet, but isolated football star who now plays lots of video games. Tim is a gentle giant who is over 6’2″ but speaks softly.

The film will be released sometime in 2014, well, that's if they can get this role cast. The film 'Men, Women, Children' explores family issues and sex in the new digital age of Facebook and social media. It is based on the 2011 Chad Kultgen novel.

Jamie Dorman Casted as Christian Grey

It's officially official!

Jamie Dornan has been cast as Christian Grey in the highly anticipated film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.

The good news was announced Thursday afternoon by none other than E.L. James via Twitter.
"Stow your twitchy palms ladies… our man is here. Welcome to #TeamFifty @JamieDornan1 x"
OK, deep breaths people.

The 31-year-old Northern Irish actor was rumored to have been the frontrunner to replace Charlie Hunnam after he auditioned on Friday, Oct. 18.

'Divergent' Spills Audition Process

Miles Teller has revealed that he auditioned for the role of four in the upcoming film "Divergent."
During an interview with the blog Just Jared the actor revealed that he had tried out for the male lead in the new young adult adaptation. He said, "I originally auditioned for Four and that didn't work out."

However he said that he did not have to audition for the role of Peter, which he eventually got. He said, "I didn't have to audition. The director saw Shailene [Woodley] and I in Spectacular Now, and said, 'Hey, would you be interested in this?'" 

He continued, "And they're like, 'We think you would make a good villain. Would you want to play the role of Peter?' And I said 'Yeah, sure.' I didn't know much about him. I read the script, obviously. Once I was cast and people were talking about it online, I read the book after. I didn't know that Peter was so hated."

'Somnia' Calls for Extras

MOBILE, Alabama --  The psycho-thriller "Somnia" is scheduled to film in Mobile and Baldwin County from mid-November through the end of December, and the production is looking for local talent to be extras in the feature-length movie.  

Here are the details of the casting calls provided by the Mobile Film Office:

When: Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. 

Where: University of South Alabama Baldwin County in Fairhope at 111 St. James St.  (Look for signs)

Your website is probably the most important marketing tool you have. Why? It encompasses all of your marketing tools under one umbrella. It is your store, your homefront. Even when you are out of town or working on set, an agent or casting director can see your work and forward it on to someone who’s interested in auditioning and hiring you! It works for you while you sleep. And it’s live and ever-changing as you grow and develop your career. You can add new clips from films and TV series. You can add new photos from vacations and Industry events you attended, new commercials, voiceovers, and a weekly blog so we learn a little bit about your interests, viewpoints, and personal style. It sells you when you aren’t there in person.

NBC TV Series Holds Casting Call

Today Open-Casting-Calls.info is reporting that Wolf Films and Open 4 Business Productions are now in production on the new one-hour NBC TV police drama series "Chicago PD", and Bill Marinella Casting has announced an open casting call on October 20, 2013 for people interested in appearing on the show as fully paid extras and featured background actors. LA Acting Auditions Examiner Alan Baltes is assisting in getting the word out. 

 The principal actor casting directors in New York and Chicago have been holding auditions for series regulars, recurring roles, guest stars, and day players. The series extras are being cast on an ongoing basis throughout production on season one. The show is a spin-off from the hit NBC TV series "Chicago Fire". Shooting takes place at the Cinespace Chicago Film Studios and various locations around Chicago, Illinois.

Encouragement within "As Bees in Honey Drown" Audition

Witnessing an audition for a play is a little different than for a dance audition. With The College’s Dance Ensemble auditions last month, you get to observe the movements of the dancer, and how they show off their talent through music. As a dancer myself, it’s interesting to watch them fly across the stage; friends cheer each other up when they stumble in front of choreographers, or forget their steps. You learn by observing their moves, and creating your own in your head. Play auditions don’t require you to use improvisation as much; the script is what you are given to make something out of it.
 
The College held auditions for the ironic and sarcastic comedy “As Bees in Honey Drown” on Oct. 4, and it was intriguing to see the performance anxiety level in the eyes of those who tried out. Six people were to be cast, with four actors playing different characters included. Some actors were good and made the director, Shane Taylor, laugh with their use of comedy. Some were nervous and unprepared to speak in front of the director. Taylor was most impressed by third year student Heather Leigh. Leigh tried out for the lead role of con artist Alexa Vere de Vere, and even with the script in front of her, she knew how to portray and explain Vere de Vere’s emotions.

Audition Reels Might Soon be the Key Factor

Performers used to have one shot to nail their audition in a studio, but we are now in an age of technology in which actors looking to break into the business may be smart to first shine on the smallest of screens.

Online video has quickly become the popular way for stage actors to be seen. Tim Grady realized the need for theatrical video reels in 2012 when he was working a gig at Maltz Jupiter Theatre in Florida. As the guy with a Flip cam, he was constantly being asked by cast mates to record them singing so they could send clips to a New York audition they were missing. “I kept thinking while I was filming actors that there had to be a way professionally to put yourself together in a three-minute reel that shows off your acting, singing, dancing abilities and then present that to casting directors,” he says. So Grady founded Tim Grady Films—a professional reel-making service catering to musical theater performers. “The need for a theatrical reel is becoming as necessary as a headshot and résumé,” he says.

'Big Stone Gap' Seeks Real Nurses, Doctors, Technicians

BIG STONE GAP, Va. – Those making the movie "Big Stone Gap" are looking for a few local faces to feature on the silver screen.

The movie's casting company put out a casting call for extras Monday evening. Specifically, the casting directors are looking for real nurses, doctors, emergency medical technicians, coal miners and young adults ages 18-24 to play high school students.

The extra positions are paid and some may be asked to work multiple days, according to a written statement from Bill Marinella Casting.

Things to Know Before You Say Yes to Audition

Today's column focuses on the business of acting, rather than the art. Due to a recent booking issue with an actor and an agency, I initially wanted to write about things you need to know before you accept a job. However, upon second thought, it's important you don't go through the audition process for a job you wouldn't accept. So here are seven things you should know before accepting an audition!

1. Accountability. You may have a great agency with a reliable staff representing you, but remember that your career is your responsibility. If you receive an audition appointment and have concerns over any of the below details, ask! Don't make assumptions, and don't confirm without getting your questions answered.

2. Availability. It is your responsibility to double check callback and shoot dates for a job prior to confirming an initial audition—even if you have given book-out dates to your agency. If you're not available for the callback and/or shoot dates, cancel the appointment.

How to Manage the Waiting Period During Post-Audition

So you just left the casting office after auditioning for a recurring role on that gritty new cable series everyone’s raving about. There are easily 10,000 actors who would give up an organ to land a part on that show. You feel you’re perfect for the role and have prepared for the role responsibly.

As you’re walking back to the car muttering your lines under your breath, thoughts—both crazy and lucid—are racing through your mind. “I think I nailed it, but what did they think?” or “Oh shit, that was a mess. I hope they didn’t notice.”

A very common and constant question actors have after a film or TV audition is: “When should I expect to hear back from casting?” The answer is: There’s no way to know. The soonest you may hear is that day and the longest may be up to seven months. Aside from staying positive, owning a functional cell phone, and checking the status of the project on IMDb, here are some other fun and proactive things you can do.

Lightsabers Involvement for Saoirse Ronan's Star Wars VII Audition

What do you picture in your mind when you read about the plethora of actors allegedly going in for auditions on J.J. Abrams cloaked-in-secret Star Wars: Episode VII? Does it involve actors miming an escape from a Sarlacc pit or acting as if they’re standing aboard a ship that’s being attacked? Surely Abrams & Co. aren’t letting actors run around with lightsabers, are they? They are! Well, they’re at least pretending to, according to Empire and Saorise Ronan, the Host actress who was rumored to have recently read for a role in the film. Not only has she confirmed the audition, but also mentioned that the tryout involved acting as if she was handling one of the most famous weapons in sci-fi history.

So what does this mean? Nothing, really, since for all we know, Ronan was just auditioning for a role in a fake commercial that Abrams is going to have someone watch for a split second in the background of a cantina in the middle of the movie. But it’s nice knowing nothing at this point, because speculation can and does run rampant. But it’s how she brings It up that gives us an interesting clue.

The Dark Knight Trilogy's upcoming 'Ultimate Collection' Blu-ray release packs in a host of never-before-seen special features. For real film geeks, there's the chance to get a glimpse of Christian Bale and Cillian Murphy's screen tests for Batman Begins.

The sets are a bit wonky, the Batsuit is Val Kilmer's and Amy Adams (!) is Rachel Dawes, but in Bale's performance you can still spot the seeds of his powerful turn as the Caped Crusader.

Star Wars VII Casting Makes Way for the Wookie's Return

A casting call for seven-foot actors from the studios behind the new Star Wars films has fueled speculation that wookiees could be making a return to the long-running space saga.

Disney, Lucasfilm and production company Bad Robot, owned by director JJ Abrams, issued the call via a British casting and auction service, Spotlight. Star War: Episode VII is being filmed in London early next year for a 2015 release date. 

The call, for a movie cited only as "untitled studio feature" is for a "male 7 ft to 7.3 ft tall with a slim/thin build and upright posture. Not too worked out or too 'thick set' especially in the shoulders. Broad facial features would be a bonus." The wookie-like requirements were first picked up by Den of Geek.
