Recasting Talks Among Original Cast Members of 'The Mortal Instruments'

We’ve known that Sony is working on the script for The Mortal Instruments follow up City of Ashes, and now the first new actress has been unveiled.

Sigourney Weaver is in talks with the studio to star as Imogen, one of the leaders of the Shadowhunters who’s out to avenge her son’s death. The news was broken by The Hollywood Reporter.

Sony began work on the City of Ashes script in May, signaling their confidence in the success of the first movie City of Bones, which doesn’t hit theaters until late August. Stars Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell-Bower are signed on to return as is director Harald Zwart. All other cast members involved with the first film are expected to return so long as their characters have roles in the book.

Casting Opportunities Plague Cleveland

The "Captain America" and "Draft Day" crews have blown town, but there are still several opportunities for folks to break into film and TV productions as extras or in small roles.

Sunday from 9 to 4 in Olmsted Falls a new film is looking for "real people" to fill several slots. Here's the info (below) from the Greater Cleveland Film Commission, which regularly posts information on upcoming casting calls.

One of the more curious listings on their site: Coordinators of a "Disaster Drill" at Burke Lakefront Airport are seeking "Volunteer Victims." The wardrobe is not terribly elaborate: "Old clothes. You will be made up to look like you were in a crash."

Casting Underway for Whit Stillman's Next Film?

Back in May the news came in, via The Hollywood Reporter, that Whit Stillman was heading to Cannes to hold meetings for his next film, a period comedy set in Britain.

Presumably those meetings were successful as The New York Post are reporting that he’s now casting for the film.

Back in May, Stillman said the following about the lead role,
"I believe this new story has the best female part of all the films I’ve made"
And he’s now added that he’s met with a British actress.

Stillman is intending to shoot in Britain or “perhaps at the Anglo-Irish great houses near Dublin”. He’s previously mentioned projects that never came to fruition which were based in the British Isles so perhaps this new film is actually something that Stillman has been keen on making for some time.

Casting Director Tom Donahue Examines Casting Process

Most cinephiles likely wouldn't know the answer to the question, "Who is Marion Dougherty?" Dougherty was a guiding influence in making the role of casting director what it is today and is cited by many of Hollywood's biggest names as establishing their careers. Having been in the business for over 50 years, she "found" and aided fledging actors such as Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Glenn Close, Danny Glover and Jon Voight, to name a few.

Tom Donahue's Casting By examines the role of the casting director, a position that finds the fresh faces of film, often championing unknown actors that studios and directors didn't want to take a chance on.

Common Mistakes on Student Film Auditions

Landing roles in student productions is often vital to obtaining reel footage and establishing film work on a resume. (Vancouver Film School, Creative Commons)
In a field that requires spending so much time becoming someone else, it’s no wonder that new actors have a little trouble portraying their most important character - themselves. While student films are not the end goal for most aspiring Hollywood talent, landing roles in student productions is often vital to obtaining reel footage and establishing film work on a resume.

After casting multiple student shorts last semester, I noticed several problems that otherwise talented actors caused for themselves during the casting process. Here are four easily avoidable major mistakes actors make when auditioning for student films:

Insightful Tips on Dealing with Self-Tape Audition

8 Tips For Self-Taping Your Auditions
With shorter production, tighter budgets, and more out-of-state shoots, a taped audition may become your first—and sometimes only—connection with casting directors, producers and directors. A self-taped audition may be submitted when you’re out of town, on-set, facing scheduling challenges (you have too many appointments!), or you’re a casting office favorite—but they haven’t seen you play this type of role.

The turnaround time for your self-taped audition is quick, with just days to read the script, make your strong specific choices, tape, edit, and send it in. How do you make sure we see and hear you while showing your personality and sharing your best performance and–receive a call-back or booking? When my clients cannot get to my studio to tape and coach their auditions, they use this alternative.

Few Advices on Lo-Fi Horror Films Auditions

http://cdn-media.backstage.com/files/media/uploads/zinnia/IMG_4852.2.jpg.300x200_q100.jpg
Following in the tradition of “The Blair Witch Project,” writer-director Jimmy Loweree’s new lo-fi, found-footage indie “Absence” is a horror film with a fresh twist: The reason four people are in an isolated cabin in the woods is because the seven-months-pregnant Liz claims to be the victim of cesarian theft. Of course, things aren’t that easily explainable, and it’s not long before flashing lights and strange noises are driving Liz, her husband, and her brother to question what’s happening around them.

We spoke to Loweree about casting an indie horror film, and he gave some advice about what similar projects may be looking for in an audition.

Cast a wide net when casting.

Though “Absence” only has four main characters, Loweree still had what he calls “a fairly large casting call.” A friend with experience ran the casting calls, and the team ended up auditioning almost 300 people over three and a half days. “It was very educational for sure,” Loweree says. “I was trying to do my best to make them comfortable.”

EXCLUSIVE: Joey King has been tapped for the role of Grace Bloom in Wish I Was Here, the indie drama Kickstarted by Zach Braff. King will play Grace Bloom, the 12-year-old daughter of Braff’s character who takes her Jewish education very seriously and is dubious about having him as her home teacher. She is repped by Coast To Coast Talent Group and Industry Entertainment.

Disney is adding to the cast of Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Casting Questions for the 'Justice League'

Justice-League

With news this week that Christian Bale officially won’t be in any future Justice League movie, whether based on the script David Goyer’s currently at work on or not, there’s a bit of a vacuum to the roster. It’s possible, we suppose, that Ryan Reynolds could return as Hal Jordan, but after the disaster that was the Green Lantern movie, DC and Warner Bros. seems pretty intent on leaving that story and continuity behind.

And it begs the question: Outside of Henry Cavill’s Superman, who rounds out the Justice League ensemble? We’re certainly not the first to ask the question, but the 4th of July weekend seems a particularly apt time to talk about casting possibilities for the Justice League of America. Our staff’s come up with a few options, some rote, some a little out there. Perhaps keying off the comedy of errors that has been the various attempts to get a Justice League film up and going (in contrast to Marvel’s wildly successful Phase 1), one of our staff even cast the whole thing as a comedy. (For the record, Desetoiles’s lineup went like this: Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell as Batman, Kristen Wiig as Wonder Woman, Kevin Hart as Flash, Kevin James as Green Lantern, Melissa McCarthy as the Martian Manhunter, Rachel Dratch as Aquaman, Mike Tyson as Hawkman, Charlie Sheen as Green Arrow, and Ashton Kutcher as Cyborg. That would be some movie indeed.)

Long Casting and Production Process for Marvel Films

Justice League members
Marvel Studios has a 100% confirmed schedule set in place through 2015. This May Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will kick start with Iron Man 3; Thor: The Dark World will arrive in November; Captain America: The Winter Soldier will be in theaters April of next year; Guardians of the Galaxy will be blasting off in August 2014; The Avengers 2 will reassemble the heroes in May the following year; and Ant-Man will be introduced that November.

But if the Marvel plan is a smoothly paved highway, that makes the DC Cinematic Universe more of the gravely dirt path. In June of last year it looked as though we were on the road towards a legitimate live-action Justice League film, but due to creative issues behind the scenes in the time since the ride has been a bit bumpy. Will Christopher Nolan continue working with in the superhero world post-Man of Steel? What’s the latest on the other heroes in the line-up? There are a lot of questions floating in the ether, and we’re following them to see where they lead.

Casting Call for Female Filmmakers

Summer is the perfect time for a night out at the cinema, but maybe you've noticed something missing at the movies: women.

Women make up a minority of movie creators: 7 percent of directors, 13 percent of writers and 20 percent of producers; that's nearly five men for every woman working behind the scenes.

Out of last year's biggest movies, 28 percent of speaking characters were female. That's down from a third just five years ago, according to the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California.
